Harvest

As autumn settles over Aquidneck Island, Newport comes alive with seasonal celebrations that toast the rich bounties of land and sea. Autumn traditions kick off in nature with the Norman Bird Sanctuary Harvest Fair, where families gather for hayrides, local craft vendors, and classic field games set against picturesque coastal trails. Seafood lovers can head downtown for the 35th Annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival to sample fresh local oysters, fish tacos, and clam chowder alongside live music right on the historic waterfront. Rounding out the harvest trail, the Annual Harvest Festival at Newport Vineyards offers the ultimate toast to the season with grape stomping, estate-grown wine tastings, and crisp cider surrounded by acres of vibrant vineyard foliage. Together, these fall favorites capture the authentic taste, warmth, and spirit of a New England autumn.

Humor

Get ready to laugh as Rhode Island’s premier stand-up event returns for autumn with the Rogue Island Comedy Festival, running October 8–11, 2026. Founded by local comedians Doug Key and Katie Latimer, this highly anticipated bi-annual festival brings a top-tier roster of nationally touring headliners and breakout stand-ups—featured on Netflix, Comedy Central, Don’t Tell Comedy, and late-night TV—directly to Aquidneck Island. Showcasing non-stop comedy across 90-minute sets, the multi-day festival takes over several beloved local venues, including Stoneacre Garden, Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling, and the historic Jane Pickens Theater. Whether you grab a single-show ticket or a full weekend pass, it’s an unbeatable way to enjoy crisp autumn evenings with craft drinks and top-tier comedy right in the heart of Newport.

Hospitality

For local Aquidneck Islanders, the Broadway Street Fair is the ultimate sign that “shoulder season” is finally here. Once the summer crowds clear out, this annual gathering gives locals a chance to reclaim Broadway, stroll from Equality Park down to Washington Square, and catch up with friends and neighbors over great food, live local music, and local art.

Beyond being a fantastic fall day out, the fair pours vital off-season support into local spots, gives hometown nonprofits a stage for community outreach, and highlights the incredible talent of our island’s artists and performers.

This year, don’t miss our very own hometown boys—who some of us may or may not be married to—the Newport Step Brothers! Come check out Russ, Vic, and Bobby Z as they light up the Beer Garden off Washington Square with their awesome mix of wide-ranging covers and original tracks.

Heaters

More homeowners are making the switch to electric heat pumps as an upgrade from traditional natural gas and oil systems, driven by a combination of indoor cleanliness, superior efficiency, and long-term cost savings. Unlike fossil fuel systems that burn oil or gas on-site—releasing combustion byproducts, particulate matter, and odor into the home—heat pumps operate purely on electricity to transfer heat rather than generate it. This eliminates carbon monoxide risks and significantly improves indoor air quality through continuous, built-in filtration.

Today’s electric heat isn’t your grandmother’s electric heat—gone are the days of energy-draining, red-hot baseboard heaters or early-generation heat pumps that sputtered out when the temperature dropped. Modern cold-climate systems utilize variable-speed inverter compressors and vapor-injection technology, allowing units with high HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) and COP (Coefficient of Performance) ratings to reliably pull warmth from outdoor air and run efficiently at 100% capacity in temperatures well below freezing—even down to -13°F or lower.

From an efficiency standpoint, heat pumps are remarkable, regularly achieving 300% to 400% efficiency ratings by delivering three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed, compared to traditional fuel furnaces that peak at 80% to 95% efficiency. This incredible performance translates directly into operational savings, shielding households from volatile oil and gas delivery prices while consolidating heating and air conditioning into a single, low-maintenance system. Combined with generous federal tax credits, state rebates, and the option to power the system using home solar, heat pumps offer a cleaner, quieter, and far smarter way to maintain year-round home comfort.
