Sunsets…Summer Solstice

As we approach the summer solstice on June 21, Newport is gearing up to celebrate the longest, most sun-drenched day of the year. There is no better way to cap off this astronomical milestone than by catching a classic Coastal Rhode Island sunset, where the golden hour stretches out just a bit longer over the Atlantic. For an iconic, postcard-perfect view, make your way down Ocean Drive to the historic Castle Hill, where you can watch the sun dip right below the horizon with a perfectly curated cocktail in hand on ‘The Lawn’. If you prefer to tailgate or stretch out on a massive lawn, Brenton Point State Park offers wide-open, panoramic vistas of Narragansett Bay that never disappoint. For those looking to stay closer to town, grab a spot on Van Zandt Pier to watch the sky turn brilliant shades of orange and pink perfectly framed against the silhouette of the Newport Bridge. Happy solstice, and don’t forget to get out early to claim your front-row seat to summer’s grandest show!

Stories…Summer Reading

There is nothing quite like pairing the sound of crashing waves with a phenomenal page-turner, and this season’s summer reading lineup is shaping up to be spectacular. Leading the charts of must-read books are buzzing titles like The Academy, a juicy, secrets-filled boarding school (rumored to be based on St. Georges) drama co-written by the undisputed queen of beach reads, Elin Hilderbrand. Local bookworms are in for a massive treat, as Hilderbrand is heading to town for a highly anticipated book reading and signing event right here in Newport! To grab your copy of her latest bestseller, pre-order your tickets, or browse through an expertly curated stack of this summer’s top fiction and non-fiction releases, look no further than Charter Books on Broadway. As our absolute favorite independent local bookstore, Charter Books is the ultimate neighborhood hub for literary lovers, making it the perfect first stop to stock up your beach bag before the event sells out. If you have a young reader in your life they are offering a summer reading program for children ages 18-13 with potential for free books and prizes!

Sunbathing

Aquidneck Island boasts a spectacular lineup of coastal stretches perfect for sunbathers looking to soak up the rays. In Newport proper, Easton’s Beach (locally known as First Beach) offers a lively vibe and wide sandy shores, accessible via daily paid parking lots (or free parking for Newport residents with a city-issued residential sticker). For a truly premier, picturesque experience along the scenic Ocean Drive, Gooseberry Beach is an absolute must-visit; nestled in a protected cove with calm, gentle waters, it offers a serene sunbathing atmosphere. While it operates as a private beach club, Gooseberry is open to the public for a daily vehicle parking fee, though spots fill up fast on weekends, making an early morning arrival or a bike ride down the coast your best bet. If you want to skip the crowds entirely, tucked-away Reject’s Beach at the end of the Cliff Walk offers an intimate, free-to-access sunbathing haven, provided you are willing to walk or bike in, as there is no dedicated parking lot. Just over the town line in Middletown, you will find the local favorites: Sachuest Beach (Second Beach), famous for its rolling surf and massive expanse of soft sand, and the adjacent, calmer Third Beach, which is ideal for a more relaxed, wind-sheltered lounge. To gain hassle-free vehicle access to Second and Third Beach, out-of-town visitors can purchase daily parking passes right at the gate, while locals can breeze through the express lanes by securing a seasonal Middletown beach sticker online ahead of time.

Sewer & Septic

Beneath Newport’s historic charm lies a hidden, rapidly aging underground infrastructure. Many of the city’s sewer lines are over a century old, and across Aquidneck Island, numerous residential septic systems are now pushing far past their expected lifespans. Decades of shifting earth and heavy usage have caused subterranean lines to sag, ancient concrete to crumble, and vital connections to break. To prevent a catastrophic—and incredibly messy—failure, home inspectors and plumbing experts strongly emphasize the importance of conducting a sewer camera scope. This diagnostic check allows you to look directly inside the pipes to catch structural flaws before they turn into a baseline emergency. Because completely replacing these buried lines and septic systems can cost tens of thousands of dollars, making regular maintenance and comprehensive inspections a non-negotiable part of your home purchase process is the only way to protect your wallet and your peace of mind.
