KIDS

If you’re wondering how to keep the kids entertained during February break, look no further. From explosive experiments to scaly encounters and soulful grooves, here are the three “must-see” events for families this year.

1. Fire & Ice Mad Science Show

Get ready for some “cool” science—literally. The Mad Science team is taking over the Marriott for a high-energy show that feels more like magic than school. This year’s “Fire & Ice” theme features foggy dry ice storms, giant floating beach balls, and “magical” eggs being sucked into flasks using the power of oxygen. It’s loud, it’s bubbly, and it’s the perfect way to spark a little curiosity in your junior scientists.

When: Monday, February 16, 2026 @ 12:00 PM

Where: Newport Marriott

Cost: $7 with Winterfest Bracelet ($9 without)

2. The Reptile Show

Immediately following the science fun, stick around the Marriott for a visit from the stars of the wild. Reptile Shows of New England brings the jungle to Newport with an interactive presentation featuring huge snakes, ancient turtles, and exotic lizards. It’s not just a “look but don’t touch” event; kids will learn about habitats and natural behaviors while getting (safely) up close to these fascinating creatures.

When: Monday, February 16, 2026 @ 2:30 PM

Where: Newport Marriott

Cost: $7 with Winterfest Bracelet ($9 without)

3. Jazz for Kids at Greenvale Vineyards

Who says jazz is just for grown-ups? Head over to the beautiful, historic Greenvale Vineyards for an afternoon of “Jazz for Kids.” This event introduces little ones to old-time standards and the rhythmic joy of jazz in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. While the kids are tapping their toes to the music, parents can enjoy wine tastings available for purchase. It’s the ultimate “win-win” afternoon for the whole family.

When: Thursday, February 19, 2026 @ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Where: Greenvale Vineyards, Portsmouth

Cost: FREE & Open to the Public

Most of the best kid activities are either free or heavily discounted if you have a Newport Winter Festival Bracelet. They are waterproof, easy to wear all week, and unlock deals at restaurants (like the famous Burger Bender contest!) and shops all over town.

Frost, freeze, & flow are dangerous words when talking about real estate in the dead of winter. Inspect your attic for frost or condensation. Frost on nails, damp insulation, or dark staining can signal air leakage or inadequate ventilation. Restricted airflow reduces efficiency and can shorten equipment lifespan. Ensure supply and return vents are unobstructed by furniture, rugs, or drapes. Check exterior hose bibs for freeze damage. Even when hoses are removed, freezing temperatures can damage plumbing. Look for cracks, drips, or slow leaks during brief warm-ups. February is not the time to get sleepy on house maintenance and may, in fact, be the most crucial time of year to do an assessment around your home.
